Happy Valley has long-been rated a top place to live thanks to the vibrancy of Penn State and State College and the surrounding communities and small towns. The village of Boalsburg is one of the nearest to campus and local amenities like theatres, concert facilities, athletic venues and shops and restaurants, and is also a picturesque and historic gem that offers convenient small town living and an abundance of outdoor recreation.

With a population just under 5,000, Boalsburg pedestrian-friendly streets are lined with locally-owned restaurants and shops. Nestled against a mountain backdrop, Boalsburg is ideal for “just outside your door” access to a robust array of the area’s best backcountry recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, skiing and camping.

One of Boalsburg largest parks is 68-acre Oak Hall Regional Park, which plays host to sports tournaments for baseball, flag football and cross-country running and offers walking paths with incredible views. Just a few miles to the east is Tussey Mountain, offering 50 acres of skiing, snowboarding and tubing in the winter months and go-karts, skateboarding, mini-golf, fishing and more in warmer weather. The venue also hosts concerts and its own popular event Wingfest in the summer.

The Pennsylvania Military Museum, located across from downtown Boalsburg, offers not only educational tours but also a large lawn and flat, paved walking paths. The site hosts one of the area’s largest farmer’s markets every Tuesday from May through November.

As the ‘birthplace of Memorial Day,’ Boalsburg shows off its historical significance with an annual celebration that includes re-enactments, a carnival, a parade and a 3.8-mile road race.
