2020 was a big year for Advanced Powder Products, Inc. (APP). The Happy Valley company specializes in metallurgy, engineering, metal injection molding and 3-D metal printing for a range of industries, including defense, aerospace, automotive and industrial. Following honors in 2019 — including being ranked a Top 100 of Pennsylvania company on the Inc. 5000 list and ranking No. 3,066 on the list, with its three-year revenue growth of 121% — APP kicked off its 20th year with a bang.
APP started the summer of 2020 off winning the grand prize in both the aerospace/defense and medical/dental for metal injection molding categories at the 2020 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition. According to APP, in the aerospace/defense category for metal injection molding components, the team won the grand prize for a redesigned trigger mechanism housing to be used in a new 9-mm subcompact pistol for its customer, O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. The grand prize in the medical/dental category for metal injection molding components was awarded for APP’s guide tube used in dental surgery.
As APP mentions in a release from earlier this year, “Applications that require small, complex metal components have been turning to powder metallurgy technologies like metal injection molding to drive continuous improvement and innovation. Due to its design flexibility, MIM manufacturing continues to gain popularity among those requiring small, durable components, including automotive, medical device, aerospace, defense and military and defense industries.”

Later in the year, APP completed its new 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, right here in Happy Valley.
“The metal injection molding industry is growing at a rate of 5 to 7% and APP is proud to be one of the fastest-growing companies in the United States for the last four years,” the company said at the time. “With that growth, we were quickly running out of space. The completion of our building expansion will support our growth by adding capacity for subsequent years. This allows APP to vertically integrate to better serve our growing customer base and needs.”
The new facility, which opened in November, houses a state-of-the-art quality lab and an R&D center, and allows for increased processing capabilities.
“We are driving technology-based manufacturing to better service our customers and continue our growth. Our growth plans include the hiring of skilled professionals, engineers, and technicians, as well as entry-level manufacturing support,” the company also said.
