Quality of Life in Happy Valley

I have a friend who regularly shares his travel experiences. I hear stories of bicycling through Europe, exploring food in India, and camping in 12 different states during the summer months. He is now retired, and could choose to live anywhere, yet he continues to call State College his home. I’ve asked him why, after all the exciting stories in exotic locations, he chooses to make Happy Valley his home base. His answer resonates with me: “Where else can I go for a remote hike, experience some of the best bird-watching, hang out at a quality coffee shop, check out a concert or show, and catch a Big-Ten sporting event all in the same day? Oh, and if I want more adventure, I can visit Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, DC, or NYC in under 5 hours.” Indeed, we live in a unique location with much to offer.

I’ve lived here for most of my life, and I’m still surprised at how many trails I’ve never hiked, how many events I haven’t attended. Still, there’s plenty I have done and continue to do. What follows is a small sampling of the gems that exist in State College.

Whether it’s catching a show at Nittany theatre at The Barn in Boalsburg, walking on campus to experience a Centre Stage or a Centre for the Performing Arts performance, visiting the Penn State Downtown Theatre, there’s always a live performance on the calendar. If plays or musicals aren’t your thing, The State Theatre regularly hosts live music, movies, and dance performances. And children who crave the spotlight can participate in Singing Onstage

State College and the surrounding area are rife with hiking, boating, and other outdoor opportunities. From an easy trail in Walnut Springs Park to the longest hiking trail in Pennsylvania (mid-state trail), hikers of all abilities will find opportunities to explore. Fishing and boating enthusiasts can access Penns Creek, Fisherman’s Paradise, Sayer’s Lake, and Spruce Creek. Our area has some of the best fly fishing in the country.

My family can’t get enough sports, and State College provides top-tier competition. While Happy Valley is synonymous with Penn State Football, there are plenty of other highly competitive teams. In ten minutes, we can be sitting in the Bryce Jordan Center witnessing the PSU basketball teams take on top ranked opponents. Wrestling, fencing, lacrosse, and volleyball are all perennially powerhouse teams that compete with the best in the nation. Runners can find local 5Ks, 10Ks, and an annual Nittany Valley Half Marathon. For the past two years, State College has hosted a 70.3 mile Ironman race. The Nittany Valley Running Club keeps a list of races and group outings. State College also provides a wealth of youth sports opportunities.

Whether it’s sushi, pizza, tacos, or burgers, State College has something for every palette. We regularly enjoy the wood fired pizza from Faccia Luna, and the panang curry from Cozy Thai. The atmosphere, service, and quality of food at Allen Street Grill are top notch. Gathering for a drink with friends? Check out Boal City Brewing. For the vegetarians and vegans, Otto’s caters to special diets with dishes like tofu wings, and a strawberry & kale power bowl. Need something quick, yet healthy? Roots Natural Kitchen offers customizable grain and salad bowls. If you’re craving a burger, check out The Field Burger and Tap in Toftrees.

When I need to get out of the house and get some work done, I head to one of our area’s cozy coffee shops. Rothrock offers rich coffee in a cool location away from downtown and campus. For those who prefer hanging out downtown, Elixir is in the heart of it all. Vibe is a newer destination, while Chew Chew Bun is a Taiwanese-inspired coffee shop on Beaver avenue. One of our favorite locations is Good Day Cafe, which employs adults with disabilities. It’s a charming coffee shop and eatery that brings a smile to everyone’s face.

Whether you’re a long-time resident of State College, a weekend traveler, or someone considering a permanent move to the area, there are always new surprises in store. Speaking of surprises, with the holiday season in full swing, here are some gift ideas that provide a little State College flavor.
