As we experience a polar vortex sweeping across much of the United States, with frigid temperatures and icy conditions disrupting daily life, it’s worth reflecting on the extreme weather challenges facing other parts of the country. Over the Covid-19 pandemic, northern-residing Americans flocked to southern and southwest states like Florida, Texas, and Arizona. While these states may offer more consistent sunshine and warm weather, they are frequently plagued by devastating and costly weather-related disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires. California, for instance, continues to battle catastrophic wildfires fueled by persistent drought and record-breaking heat waves.
