Pennsylvania’s new tourism brand, “The Great American Getaway,” launched by Governor Shapiro in May, shines a spotlight on the Alleghenies region, positioning it as a prime destination for travelers seeking the perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and rich history. The campaign highlights the diverse attractions and unique experiences that make the Alleghenies a standout location for visitors seeking family fun, year-round outdoor recreation, cultural experiences that rival big cities, and much more. The campaign includes the Happy Valley region as part of the Allegheny Mountains tourism promotions, highlighting key attractions like the Penn State Arboretum, the Berkey Creamery and more.

Nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania, the Alleghenies region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, from rolling hills and dense forests to serene lakes and clear, winding rivers and streams. This natural beauty is at the forefront of “The Great American Getaway,” inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the great outdoors. Popular spots like Tussey Mountain and Rothrock State Forest are featured alongside other areas like Blue Knob State Park and Raystown Lake for countless activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and fishing, catering to both thrill-seekers and those looking for a peaceful retreat.

Wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries in Happy Valley are also highlighted, along with top notch local food spots like Elk Creek Café, Happy Vally Brewing and Otto’s Pub & Brewery.

For visitors seeking unique accommodations, the campaign suggests B&Bs and lodges where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as golfing, hiking, fishing, and stargazing, without sacrificing modern conveniences.

The Alleghenies are also steeped in history, with numerous sites that tell the story of America’s past. The campaign emphasizes the opportunities to experience Centre County history in its charming small towns like Bellefonte and Boalsburg.

In addition to its natural and historical appeal, the Alleghenies offers a vibrant cultural scene. State College offers a mix of local arts, music, and cuisine that provides visitors with a taste of the region’s unique character. Visitors exploring this cultural hub can enjoy charming shops and savor regional delicacies, as well as unique local festivals such as the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, one of the top-ranked juried art fairs in the country, spanning Penn State’s campus and downtown State College. Penn State’s performing arts venues also bring Broadway touring productions, big-name music acts and more to the area, including Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and many others.

Promotion of the area through the Great American Getaway campaign is a welcome initiative that will boost its profile as a top-tier travel destination and establish Alleghenies name among the nation’s other renowned mountain regions, like the Poconos, the Rockies, the Adirondacks and the Smokies, benefiting Happy Valley.
