The 5½ square mile radius that includes State College Borough and Penn State has attracted billions in investment over the last decade and with good reason. Happy Valley is in demand.
As part of an initiative to grow State College, numerous 12-story highrises have popped up in downtown State College in recent years to increase the amount of apartment space for students and non-students who wish to live downtown.
The creation of highrises has dramatically increased the number of beds available (over 4,000 as of June 2023) and has encouraged businesses to move downtown and out of cities. KCF Technologies and Orange Theory are just two examples of businesses that have moved into the commercial space available on the first floors of highrises. (Still concerned that the official bird of Happy Valley is a crane? The highrises are a very good thing for downtown State College— and you can see more of the reasons in our recent story The benefits of highrises in downtown State College.)
