On Jan. 14, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced 38 companies, seven organizations and 14 individuals from across the United States won their prestigious Tibbetts Award for accomplishments in creating cutting-edge technologies. Among this prestigious list were two Happy Valley companies: Actuated Medical, Inc., and KCF Technologies. The two companies were honored for the exceptional successes they’ve achieved through SBA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs
“Actuated Medical, Inc. and KCF Technologies have leveraged America’s Seed Fund (the SBIR/STTR programs) to advance science and develop and commercialize innovative technologies,” says John Williams, SBA’s director of innovation and technology. “Actuated Medical has successfully advanced healthcare science while improving our understanding of the brain and KCF Technologies has developed a suite of wireless sensor technologies that have had a significant impact for the Department of Defense and transitioned into commercial markets. In recognition of their ingenuity and innovativeness, SBA is proud to include them in our 2020 Tibbetts Awards.”
The Actuated Medical team is honored to be recognized with the SBA 2020 Tibbetts Award. Our NeuralGlider Inserter was initially funded with an NIH SBIR with follow-on funding from the Brain Initiative. NeuralGlider allows the implantation of fine and delicate neural implants to precise locations in the brain. Its clinical applications will enable a person with a prosthetic the ability to control the motion with their brain or allow implants that turn off the symptoms of debilitating diseases such as Parkinson’s.
The Tibbetts Awards highlights the nation’s next generation of competitive creators who help push the U.S. economy into the future, recognizing the creative and impactful way organizations and individuals have supported rising tech entrepreneurs, especially in creating success within underrepresented communities. SBA administrator Jovita Carranza says: “SBA continues to play a key role in administering these research and technology funding programs, providing ‘seed money’ to help our nation’s greatest and most innovative research entrepreneurs start, grow and transition into high-growth companies. The companies and the technologies they create played a unique role in job creation, the building of new industries and communities and addressing the nation’s most pressing challenges.”
Actuated Medical, Inc. first received the Tibbetts Award in 2014, and the team there says they are honored to be recognized again in 2020.

The degree to which KCF has achieved commercial business success that is rooted in SBIR/STTR projects is literally off the charts in terms of SBIR/STTR commercialization, and that is vitally important in terms of how much real value is ultimately derived from federal innovation funding.
Jeremy Frank, CEO of KCF Technology, says KCF Technologies has been performing federal R&D as part of the SBIR and STTR programs since 2002. “I am particularly proud of the KCF team’s success in converting Phase I to Phase 2 and Phase 3 projects,” he says, “and ultimately to products and services for both industrial and DoD customers. The degree to which KCF has achieved commercial business success that is rooted in SBIR/STTR projects is literally off the charts in terms of SBIR/STTR commercialization, and that is vitally important in terms of how much real value is ultimately derived from federal innovation funding.”
Since its inception in 1982, the program has issued more than 170,000 awards with over $50 billion in funding to small businesses through the 11 participating federal agencies. It boasts one of the highest returns on taxpayer investment when measuring federal funding and economic impact.
